In late 1972, aged 17 and still at school, I wrote a letter to A.S. Neill, founder and headmaster of the (in)famous Summerhill school in Suffolk. To my delight and perhaps surprise, he replied - see opposite. What was that all about, eh?

Note 1: Although Neill's letter is clearly dated 1972, the year was actually 1973, as proved by the envelope in which it was posted (not shown). Neill died 23rd Sept 1973.

Note 2: A.S. Neill was born on 17th October!
